Call Summary Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan (MHM) invites San Antonio area artists to submit their qualifications for the "Avenue of Light,” a series of three (3) new murals to be located on the hospital’s newest building at their downtown campus. The goal of this open call is to commission an artist to give life to a visual narrative that celebrates the spirit of healing through the hospital’s commitment to the community for over 50 years. The artist’s objective will be to highlight MHM’s impact through a variety of components including; healthcare, community outreach, service, education, and the impact of their healed patients by creating a series of murals which will help tell this story through its imagery. This is an online application process only. Applications will not be accepted by postal mail or email. |

Budget Description This series of three murals will cover nearly 1,000 square feet and be painted off-site on a substrate (such as Polytab). When complete, the murals will be installed on the building’s designated walls. The total project budget is $75,000, which will cover artist honorarium and all project expenses. (This includes materials, labor, and any other associated costs. Materials budget not to exceed $5,000). Additional Terms and Requirements The artist fee of $75,000 will be paid in three installments: one third at the beginning of the project, one third at the half-way point (with design completed), and the last third at completion of the project. The fee is all inclusive, and should be used to fund materials, production support and the artist fee. Centro’s Art Everywhere Project will assist in any permitting and other issues so the artist may focus on the work. Project Description Mural Site: Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan (near McCullough and Ogden streets in San Antonio, Texas 78212) This "Avenue of Light" Mural Project will be a landmark piece on MHM’s new parking garage, welcoming patients and guests as well as the surrounding community. "Avenue of Light" Mural Overview: • This mural will depict Methodist Hospital Metropolitan as a radiant source of light—symbolizing healing, compassion, and the future of care for the surrounding community. • As the northernmost member of the McCullough Avenue Consortium, the hospital stands as a welcoming gateway, guiding people into the heart of the Avenue of Light. • May use visual metaphors such as rays of light or glowing pathways to represent the hospital’s role in illuminating lives and leading progress. • The art will ideally be contemporary and colorful with an ‘urban flair.’ • The art should be minimalist in design, with clean shapes and lines to enhance the structure without overpowering it. • The art should be designed in alignment with Methodist Healthcare System’s mission and values: Mission: Serving humanity to honor God by providing exceptional and cost-effective healthcare, accessible to all Values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence Additional Themes May Include: • Healing and the Arts - Healthcare as an art - The idea of healthcare as a beacon - Art not only assists in the healing process, but gives patients purpose - The healing that occurs at MHM allows patients to go on fulfilling that purpose - The mural may lean into various art expressions tied to corresponding elements of patient care (Ex: physical rehabilitation and dance, pulmonary care and singing, neurological care and painting, etc.) • San Antonio Culture - Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan is deeply ingrained in downtown San Antonio culture - The hospital takes pride in its city-center location, and its excellent care is available to patients from all walks of life. • Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan is at the heart of our city - Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan is at the heart of San Antonio and serves diverse people from across San Antonio and beyond. - MHM’s impact on the city is felt beyond healthcare: - Service (ministry support) - Community outreach - Education (healthcare professionals are trained here) - Our healed patients go on to have positive impact Project Specifics: • Current construction documents include composite aluminum wall panels attached to the precast concrete exterior. These panels will serve as the surface or "media" for the three murals. • The design concept behind using metal panels is to allow each one to be primed and wrapped with the artist's preferred material, painted off-site then mounted to the support rail system that will be anchored to the garage's concrete walls. Dimensions and Specifications • McCullough Mural (faces East): 25 ft wide x 15 tall - 375 sq ft • (2) Ogden Murals (face West): 35.5 ft wide x 8.5 ft tall - 302 sq ft each, 604 sq ft total (see Exhibit B for site images, end of document) These new Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan murals will be colorful, reflect the history and potential of the site and should not feature any images that may be deemed offensive or any commercial brand references. Eligibility This opportunity is open to all professional artists, age 18 and up and residing in Bexar County, regardless of residence, race, color, religion, national origin, gender, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Limiting geographical eligibility to local artists underscores our commitment to showcasing and supporting the talent within our community. Artists may apply as teams, with one designated artist serving as ‘lead artist.’ While prior mural or public art experience is helpful, it is not necessary. Artist/team may be asked about similar mural installation experiences. |

Selection Information | ||
Selection Process A panel of community members and stakeholders will review eligible applications and select three (3) finalists for this project based on merit and experience. The three artists will each propose a specific design and be interviewed, thus determining a single winning entry. Following the artist selection, the artist(s) will have the opportunity to refine, develop and install their proposed artwork. Selected artist(s) will be responsible for installation (with support from the facilities and construction team) by September 2026. Winning artist(s) and their works will be celebrated in traditional and social media when the winning works are announced, when they debut, and as opportunities arise. |

Selection Criteria Qualifications submitted will be judged on the following criteria: • Artist is San Antonio-area resident • Artist has experience with artwork completed/installed on substrate • Artist has past work examples which: - are conceptually compelling and aesthetically excellent, preferably in color - create excitement and interest from the community - are inspired to participate by a personal story or connection to the subject matter Additional Terms: • By submitting qualifications, applicant assures Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan that artwork will be original, and applicant will be able to install artwork in accordance with stated timeline. • The Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan selection committee will reserve the right to approve the winning concepts for the mural. • As producer of this open call, and on behalf of Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, San Antonio’s Art Everywhere Project has the discretion to disqualify artists whose applications are late or incomplete, and whose applications do not comply with all stated requirements. Application Requirements Artists will apply online (no applications will be accepted in person, mailed or in any other manner than via the website). Artists may submit up to three (3) artworks from their portfolio, along with a resume and an artist bio, and should include their name and current contact information. Artists are allowed to apply in teams. Initial submissions should include up to three examples of completed artwork. Artists applying as a team must split the allotted number of work examples between themselves (i.e. if submitting as a team, the maximum number of submitted artworks is still three).
