Call Summary The Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival is scheduled for Saturday, November 13th, 2021, from 6PM to midnight in downtown San Antonio's Hemisfair Park and provides FREE access to the Arts. Regional, national, and international artists are invited to submit a proposal between May 10–31, 2021, to be part of this luminous after-dark celebration of contemporary arts in San Antonio, Texas. In addition to the in-person festival submissions, video performances are also requested for a virtual showcase that will stream live on Luminaria's website, social media, and partner outlets. High quality digital videos of no more than 4 minutes per entry. No more than 3 entries per applicant/group are allowed. Due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, social distancing protocols will be enforced and updated per CDC and City of San Antonio requirements for mass gatherings. All featured artists and their support teams must comply with any and all requirements. Luminaria is charged a fee for every application that is submitted. Budget Description Luminaria is committed to paying featured artists fair compensation for presentation of their new or existing work. Our fee schedule is $750 for a solo artist, $1,500 for an artist group of 2-9, and $2,000 for artist groups of 10+. At the discretion of the Curators and Executive Director, headliners could receive up to $2,500. Submissions for the virtual program will receive $150 for each selected video. Luminaria provides exposure to an audience of tens of thousands – both in-person and, new this year, virtually – publicity of your work, and professional production support.* An estimated 25,000 people attended the 2019 festival, checking in from all over the city, the nation, and the world. International applicants must have a valid passport and visa. Payment to artists will be remitted at the festival in November 2021. *Luminaria production support includes electricity, stages, sound equipment, site lighting, artist / stage / event managers, and security. Special production elements within application proposals are the responsibility of the artist. |

Project Description Luminaria delivers a contemporary arts program that includes a festival of international stature, supports downtown & the urban core, and brings attention to San Antonio's multi-arts culture. Art Goals: The Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival will showcase hundreds of artist participants with up to 30 Featured Artists in 2021. Works that are site-specific, highly effective outdoors at night (light art), cross-disciplinary, gallery installations (limited), or stage performances are all appropriate. Artwork Location Description: Anchored in Hemisfair, the Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival establishes this downtown district as a cultural and entertainment destination. Due to the on-going Covid-19 Pandemic, the majority of the festival will be held outdoors with limited indoor locations where social distancing can be achieved. Luminaria will make final placement decisions within the footprint. Site: Hemisfair Park* Visitors to the downtown district can enjoy Hemisfair, an exciting 4-acre park dotted with public artwork created by many of San Antonio’s most prolific artists. Additionally, historic structures from the 1968 World's Fair that speak to San Antonio’s culture have been preserved, Yanaguana Garden offers shade and a playground, and the famed River Walk is just a few steps away. *Artists, staff, and attendees will be required to follow CDC and City COVID safety guidelines, such as wearing a mask and social distancing. |

Eligibility This call is open worldwide. Applicants may apply as an individual or as a group. All proposals must be submitted via this online application process on AnyArtist.org. Artwork sales are prohibited at the Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival as it is a showcase event. Artists are also required to be present at both the tech rehearsal (Friday, November 12) and the festival (Saturday, November 13). All artists must be available for and open to interacting with the public and the media to promote the festival and their art. In addition, artist networking opportunities will be made available, and participation is highly recommended. |

Selection Process Luminaria’s Curatorial Committee builds a comprehensive vision for the ever-changing arts festival. The applications are reviewed in both quantitative and qualitative methods to build a cohesive selection of regional, national, and international artists and to ensure all artistic disciplines are represented when possible. Through an open call for proposals and direct invitations, Luminaria’s curatorial committee ensures the festival's dedication to artistic excellence. Members of the curatorial committee are vetted by Luminaria’s Executive Director, and represent a diverse group of arts professionals. |

Selection Criteria Applications will be evaluated on their overall professionalism, creativity, originality, and innovation. Space activation needs as well as a diverse representation of artistic talents will be considered. There is only one application form, whether your work is visual, performance, literary, musical, architectural, fashion, film, dance, comedy, or a combination of artistic genres. Cross-disciplinary works and site-specific works are encouraged. All works must be new or created within the last three years, and all artwork / performance must be entirely your own creation. |

Timeline Upon successful completion of the application process, you will receive a confirmation email. We will contact applicants with the results of this year’s open call for proposals – applications will be declined, accepted or waitlisted. Final programming and featured artists for Luminaria 2021 will be announced publicly in the fall.
