apply button

THIS CALL HAS CLOSED.

Activated: 06/22/2020
Deadline: 09/18/2020

Call Summary
The Texas Open Call is our primary resource for identifying artists who are interested in and eligible for participation in Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residence program, as well as studio visits by curators participating in Artpace’s Curatorial Residency program. All Texas resident artists who meet the eligibility requirements will be reviewed on a rolling basis by Artpace staff, guest curators, and curatorial residents. Studio visits will take place in 2021. Artists are encouraged to apply early as deadlines are firm and will not be changed.

**With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting shutdown, Artpace is waiving the $15, removing any financial barriers for artists applying to 2022 Texas Open Call.**

Budget Description
Artpace invites three curators per year to review the Texas Open Call list and select at least 20 artists each for in-person studio visits. The visit format is up to the individual curator with an opportunity for artists to share details about their ideas, practices, and methods for making art. Although discouraged, some visits may take place via virtual meeting depending on scheduling. Upon conclusion of the studio visits, the curator will choose one of the artists for inclusion in the Artpace International Artist-in-Residence program. More than 245 artists at various stages in their careers have been selected to participate in the program. Additionally, the Texas Open Call program gives these curators the opportunity to learn about new Texas artists and select artists for their own exhibitions and programming not directly related to Artpace. This exposure can be a valuable experience for the artist and is a key goal of the program.

Annually, two curators participating in the Artpace Curatorial Residency use the Texas Open Call list to schedule in person studio visits with artists. These visits offer both curators and artists exposure, which may lead to future exhibitions at Artpace or other venues, and may also lead to write ups in publications.

Project Description
Artpace annually hosts three residencies (spring, summer, and fall). Each residency includes one Texas artist, one national artist, and one international artist, all selected by a guest curator. An Artpace residency includes travel expenses, a living stipend, a materials budget, an apartment, and studio/exhibition space. Resident artists have access to fully equipped wood and metal workshops and a digital media studio, in addition to technical and administrative support. The eight-week residency culminates in a two-month exhibition of new work at Artpace. The mission of this program is to provide artists from varied disciplines with unparalleled resources and support that allows them to experiment with new ideas and take provocative risks.

Eligibility
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY? The Texas Open Call opportunity is available only to artists currently living and working in Texas. Selection Process
ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS
While guest curators select resident artists, Artpace assists by creating the Texas Open Call list of artists living and working in Texas. Each year, three guest curators review applicants and conduct studio visits with selected artists for their respective residency cycles (spring, summer, or fall). All eligible submissions will be reviewed by each guest curator.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION?
• Artpace staff reviews your application for eligibility.
• You will be notified by August 31, 2020 *only if your application is ineligible.* If ineligible, your application materials will be removed from the Texas Open Call List.
• If your application is eligible, it will be entered into the Texas Open Call list. You will not be contacted if your application is eligible.
• Artpace selects three guest curators each year, and each curator is given access to the Texas Open Call list to select one Texas artist for each residency cycle: Spring 2022, Summer 2022, and Fall 2022.
• Approximately a year out from each residency period (in 2021), each guest curator will select 20–25 Texas artists for studio visits. Artpace will contact artists via email or phone to schedule studio visits. Studio visits for the Spring 2022 Residency will be made in spring 2021. Studio visits for the Summer 2022 Residency will be made in summer 2021. Studio visits for the Fall 2022 Residency will be made in fall 2021.
• From those studio visits, each guest curator will select a Texas artist for the International Artist-in-Residence program.

Please note: An artist can be selected for multiple studio visits within one given year, but once selected for a residency, an artist is not eligible for future studio visits with guest curators for the International Artist-in-Residence program. For example, if a guest curator visits an artist's studio in spring 2021 and selects them for a residency, the artist will no longer be eligible for summer or fall guest curator visits. No artist can participate in more than one residency.

Selection Criteria
The selection of resident artists is based entirely on the practice of the guest curator and how the artist fits within the curator's vision for the residency.
