Project Description
The Mission San José Visitor Center Mural:
In partnership with the National Park Service at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and Mission Heritage Partners, we are happy to announce a call for artist proposals to interpret and commemorate the 300-year history of Mission San José on an exterior wall of the National Park Service Visitor Center. This exciting mural will shed light on Mission San José, founded in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús, and pay tribute to the 300th anniversary of the mission. Site themes, such as adaptation to challenge, cultural identity, and human interaction with natural landscapes, may guide the artistic direction of the mural content. The site is part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which is also a World Heritage Site.

This approximately 8’ x 20’ mural will be created using paint or printing processes on a semi-permanent substrate mounted to an exterior wall of the Visitor Center, which is a modern structure located on site at Mission San José. The wall is visible from Roosevelt Avenue. The final material and mounting method must be approved by National Park Service staff prior to fabrication. This mural best suits work that will be highly effective during the daytime when the Mission is open to the public, but night time lighting options can be explored. While generally a safe and respected historic site, the applicant for this public art program accepts risks of vandalism, theft, or accidents. Luminaria, The National Park Service, and Mission Heritage Partners cannot be held liable for vandalism, theft, or accidents.

Centro San Antonio’s “Art Everywhere” Downtown Murals:
In partnership with Centro San Antonio, we are happy to announce a call for artist proposals to interpret the modern culture of San Antonio on several downtown walls. Designed to make downtown beautiful and playful, Centro SA’s “Art Everywhere” project lends culture and life to San Antonio’s urban core and the buildings and spaces that surround it. Installed on buildings that house or face local small businesses, the project employs local artists – who are also small-business people – and provides those visiting downtown a new way to experience the city.

For the two Centro SA murals, artists will select one of three locations available in the city center, all approximately 15’ x 20’ in size. The mural will be created using paint or printing processes on a semi-permanent substrate mounted to the exterior wall of one of three commercial buildings:
1) Radius Building site near the Tobin Center;
2) Herweck’s Art Supply Building on Broadway and Third; or
3) Kallison Building at Flores and Nueva.
While generally a safe and respected historic area, the applicant for this public art program accepts risks of vandalism, theft, or accidents. Luminaria and Centro San Antonio cannot be held liable for vandalism, theft, or accidents.

All artists in the greater San Antonio area are encouraged to apply.
